Adventure races are a fabulous way to get outdoors in nature, meet new people and have a great time, but for many of us, it is daunting to enter a race and compete against seasoned athletes when we are just starting out.
Luckily there are a lot of events on the local race calendar which cater for those who haven’t exercised in a while or want to have a go at something new. Over the coming months we will introduce you to some of the coaches and clubs which can help you develop the skills, fitness and confidence to start moving, but for now here are some events to put on your calendar this year:
Set in the Eungella ranges, this two-day event has something for everyone. There are three mountain bike events and three trail runs. The event runs over two days and even has something for the kids. The Mountain Bike courses include a 15km Recreational Course, a 38Km Sport Course and an 80km Marathon Course.
The Trail Runs include a 5km Family fun run/walk – designed to encourage everyone to get back to nature and experience the tropical rainforest without having to venture too far. A 15km Recreational Course and a 38km Platypus Trophy Marathon Course. Check out the Mackay Mountain Marathon website for full details: http://www.mackaymountainmarathon.com.au
This annual charity bike race attracts thousands of riders on all types of bikes. It’s one of the most popular bike events in our region and caters for all levels. Whether you are a seasoned racer or a go-slow-enjoy-the-scenery kind of rider, there are four distances range from 35km, 60km, 90km or 135 km. For the first time this year, a special family package will be included for the active family wanting to ride together. Check out or get registered today at www.river2reefride.com.au
What a great way to try new sports or put your fitness to the test in a fun and supportive environment. In March we did the team event for the Women's Only Tri - it was the first time ever doing a triathlon, and it was an incredible experience. The same event is back in October so if you missed it, here's you second chance to try a triathlon before the year is out. Join as a team or try the whole event yourself. The distances are a 200 mt swim, 8 km bike and 2 km run. If you enjoy this, definitely think of doing another open triathlon. There is tonnes of support available from theMackay Triathlon Club on how to get started as well as training. Head to www.mackaytriclub.com.au to register for the Women’s Only Triathlon in October.
Dive off from one of the most spectacular beaches in the world for this ocean event. Take the boat form Hamilton Island or from the Port of Airlie to world class Whitehaven Beach and take part in one of the events aimed at all ages. There is a 750m swim for the under 13s, and a 750m or 3km swim for the rest of us. Registrations are limited so don’t miss out, head to www.hamiltonisland.com.au and click on ‘Events’.
After you’ve completed the Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim, head at our very own pristine Balnagowan, Pioneer River for the North Mackay Sinkers Masters swimming clubs’ annual Open Water Swim event. The club look forward to welcoming past swimmers as well as new comers to their annual event.
This year, the event will offer something for all levels of swimmers – a 1.25km, 3km or 5km individual swim course with the addition of a 10km 4 x relay event. The event is open to all swimmers over 18 years and gives participants the opportunity to soak up the serenity of our beautiful river while challenging themselves to their desired level.
