I AM SUP – Beginners Stand Up Paddle Board

Saturdays: 12, 19 & 26 May 8.00am - 9.00am &  9.30am - 10.30am


Have you always wanted to learn more about the incredibly popular activity of Stand up Paddle Boarding (SUP)?  Well now is your opportunity to step onto a board and develop some skills over a 3-session program designed especially for curious beginners and newcomers to SUP.

This fun 3-session program is offered under the Mackay Regional Council Inspiring an Active Mackay (I AM) initiative, for women who are new to this activity and wanting to learn a little bit more.

The sessions include professional instruction on SUP safety, technique, turns and moves on the board and ongoing support to engage in longer-term activities and events for health and fitness. 

The I AM SUP program is also about connecting with other local women, sharing experiences, developing new friendships and starting/getting back into physical activity.

Two session times available, 8.00am and 9.30am


Pro Paddle (downstairs from the Breakwater Café OR the old Yacht Club), Mackay Marina 

Fitness level: Beginner

Price: $20 for the 4-week program (plus $2.20 booking fee)


What to Bring: water bottle, towel, change of clothes, something to comfortably SUP in (board shorts or yoga pants are often popular) protection from the sun, sense of fun.  Participants are required to wear a long sleeve rash shirt and long lycra leggings to the ankle.  These can be provided on the day. 

Your instructor: Chrissy Den Elzen has always been involved in on-water activities – Surf life-saving , SUP and Outrigging are just some of the life-long activities Chrissy has enjoyed participated in.   For Chrissy the greatest part for her is being involved in helping people achieve something new and something they may have put off trying due to fear or self-doubt. 

Join Chrissy as she takes you through the foundations and safety aspects of SUP along with some exciting little challenges to make the 3-session series fun and enjoyable for all involved.  But sign up quick, it’s anticipate that these session will book out fast!

Expect to have fun, learn something new and perhaps even get wet!!


Q - What if it’s raining? Please keep an eye on the event Facebook page to be keep up to date on the weather events. Participants will also be notified by email if an event needs to be cancelled. Where possible we will attempt to make up any sessions cancelled due to weather.

Q - What ages? The I AM program is aimed at women over the ages of 18 however, if younger women (over 13) would like to attend they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Q - Do I need to be fit? Participants should be of general good health. If you have any concerns about your health or fitness level, please see a medial practitioner before joining the program. Participants will be asked to sign this waiver before taking part in the events.

Q - What if I need to cancel? Unfortunately due to the timeframe of the program, we are unable to offer an alternative if you are unable to attend one of the sessions. Tickets for the programs are non-refundable.

Q – Why Women? This program will focus on women, due to the underrepresentation of females engaging in physical activity, as well as the key role that women have within the home, particularly around influencing healthy family choices. Women identify that barriers to exercise include difficulty prioritising due to competing responsibilities, confidence issues, fear, concerns around fitness and being injured. The I AM program aims to address some of these barriers and enable more women to begin to engage in activity.

About I AM

 The Australian and Queensland Governments, through the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, provided funding to Mackay Regional Council to deliver the Inspiring an Active Mackay (I AM) program.

I AM is aimed at delivering low-cost beginner level physical activities and skill development opportunities for women who are currently under-active or are seeking to learn a new sport within the Mackay region.

The activities on offer are based around spending time in the outdoors and skills that will enhance capacity to participate in broader events across the Region and will focus on long-term engagement in the activity.
