INSPIRING AN ACTIVE MACKAY - URBAN OUTDOOR YOGA

Spend a little time outdoors with this nature-inspired yoga program for Mackay women who may be new to or who have not tried yoga previously.

This fun four-week introductory yoga program is about introducing you and getting you started in the practice of yoga, as well as to spend some time outside in our beautiful region.

The program is offered under the Mackay Regional Council Inspiring an Active Mackay (I AM) initiative, for women who want to try yoga for the first time, develop their technique or want to get back to exercise after a long break. It is for women with a good level of physical health and have an interest in learning yoga.

The sessions include professional instruction on basic yoga poses, stretching for strength and relaxation, as well as ongoing support to engage in longer-term activities and events for health and fitness.

It’s also about connecting with other local women, sharing experiences, developing new friendships and starting/getting back into physical activity.

8.00am-9.00am on four Consecutive Sundays:

  • Sunday 20 May 8.00am - 9.00am - Mackay Botanical Gardens (Lagoon st near cafe car park)
  • Sunday 27 May 8.00am - 9.00am - Mackay Harbour (near Surf Life Saving Club), park at clubhouse
  • Sunday 3 June 8.00am - 9.00am - John Breen Memorial Park, Malcomson St (near Pioneer Pool car park & skate rink)
  • Sunday 10 June 8.00am - 9.00am - Bucasia Seaview Park, Bucasia Esplanade (opposite Steen Avenue)

 Fitness level: Beginner

 Price: $20 for the 4-week program (plus $2.20 booking fee) ** BOOK HERE

What to Bring: Being outdoor locations, participants should bring something to put under their mat to protect it from getting damp/collecting dirt eg: additional towel or picnic rug. Also, please wear insect repellent, as well as sun protection hat, glasses, shirt, sunscreen and a water bottle.

What to wear: Whatever makes you feel comfortable when moving and stretching. No shoes are required for the practice.

Your instructor: Julieanne Bergmann

After a career in the arts and marketing, Julieanne completed a year of intensive yoga study in Brisbane with senior teacher Kate Pell and Dan Alder, followed by postgraduate study with Ihana Yoga, Melbourne and continues her professional development under the guidance of physio and yoga therapists from Core Yoga, Brisbane. Julieanne also teaches yoga in workplaces and schools as part of their wellbeing programs.

“I love teaching beginners and setting them up with safe and sustainable practise tools they have for life. I welcome you to join me on a journey to learn a simple and rewarding practice, so that you too can 'yoga yoga' for life.”

Q&As:

Q - What if it’s raining? Please keep an eye on the event Facebook page to be keep up to date on the weather events. Participants will also be notified by email if an event needs to be cancelled. Where possible we will attempt to make up any sessions cancelled due to weather.

Q - What ages? The I AM program is aimed at women over the ages of 18 however, if younger women (over 13) would like to attend they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Q - Do I need to be fit? Participants should be of general good health. If you have any concerns about your health or fitness level, please see a medial practitioner before joining the program. Participants will be asked to sign this waiver before taking part in the events.

Q - What if I need to cancel? Unfortunately due to the timeframe of the program, we are unable to offer an alternative if you are unable to attend one of the sessions. Tickets for the programs are non-refundable.

Q – Why Women? This program will focus on women, due to the underrepresentation of females engaging in physical activity, as well as the key role that women have within the home, particularly around influencing healthy family choices. Women identify that barriers to exercise include difficulty prioritising due to competing responsibilities, confidence issues, fear, concerns around fitness and being injured. The I AM program aims to address some of these barriers and enable more women to begin to engage in activity.

About I AM

 The Australian and Queensland Governments, through the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, provided funding to Mackay Regional Council to deliver the Inspiring an Active Mackay (I AM) program.

I AM is aimed at delivering low-cost beginner level physical activities and skill development opportunities for women who are currently under-active or are seeking to learn a new sport within the Mackay region.

The activities on offer are based around spending time in the outdoors and skills that will enhance capacity to participate in broader events across the Region and will focus on long-term engagement in the activity.
